Dads and Doulas....

The doula's role is to give added support to the mother, not to replace the father (or partner). By our words and actions, we can provide guidance and information for the father to use in caring for the mother. We understand that it is often stressful and exciting to witness the one you love in labor. The doula's role is to be sensitive to the dynamics between the mother and her partner and to use care in knowing when to take a more peripheral role or when to respectfully step in. Since it's difficult to know exactly what to do or how to be there for the mother, dads usually feel very reassured and more relaxed by the doula's presence. They're allowed to be more effective and confident in their ability to provide comfort. Ultimately, a doula and dad (or partner) make the perfect support team for the mother by complementing one another's strengths.
